All work and no play makes Jack socially awkward

When revising you need to take time to unwind. I know what you’re thinking – ‘This is not advice that I need. When it comes to taking time off studying I am a freaky Jedi master’; however, slacking off isn’t the same as making time to play.

It’s important when studying, and in life in general, to have something to look forward to. If your time away from the textbooks doesn’t seem fulfilling, you won’t feel refreshed and ready to work again. It’s easy to end up in a situation where you switch between half heartedly revising and slouching around the house in a dressing gown watching reruns of Friends (you know who you are).

Going to a football match with some buddies for a couple of hours is a better way to refresh your mind than spending all evening mindlessly sat in front of the television.

Leaving the house and seeing friends are necessary activities if you want to avoid burning yourself out but, as you’ve already guessed, it’s not quite that simple: having firm plans of how to relax is almost as important as planning how to revise. Planning helps prevent you from wasting your spare time, as you drift around looking for ways to amuse yourself.
